Global Learning: A World of Opportunity for Appalachian Students
Why Global Learning?
There are many reasons why “Global Learning: A World of Opportunities for Appalachian Students” was selected as Appalachian’s Quality Enhancement Topic at this time in the university’s history.
These reasons include:
- Appalachian position as a growing, increasingly selective Master’s Comprehensive institution
- Its ongoing aims to promote diversity in culture and curricula, attract a more diverse student body, and encourage students to broaden their knowledge of the world through travel and study
- The many best practices for institutions and pedagogy as well as the academic studies that stress the necessity of enhanced global learning in the 21st century
- A mission statement that emphasizes the need for a diverse community and for active involvement in addressing the needs of a changing world.
Since being revised in late 2013, Appalachian’s mission statement encourages global learning even more strongly. It now opens with the declaration that Appalachian “prepares students to lead purposeful lives as engaged global citizens who understand their responsibilities in creating a sustainable future for all.”
